Village Board Brief – June 3, 2024

Highlights from previous Board meeting 5-20-24
👨‍🚒 Swearing in of two new firefighters.
↘ One resignation each from the Plan Commission and the Public Safety Commission.
🏨 The Board voted to direct Corporation Counsel to create an ordinance to regulate Short Term Rentals such as AirBNB or VRBO.
🥂First reading of an ordinance to allow alcohol sale and tasting at the Skokie Farmers Market. (Second reading and adoption 6-3-24).
📊The Board authorized retaining Klein, Thorpe and Jenkins Ltd., to draft a referendum question regarding ranked choice voting (RCV) to appear on the November 2024 ballot. Trustee Johnson abstained from this vote due to his spearheading an RCV ballot initiative already in the process of gathering resident signatures.

Village Manager’s Report
💲FY 2025 Budget for adoption.
👷Recommendation of Board approval for $150k under the Storefront Enhancement Program for 4012 – 4024 Main Street. This will cover 40% of the investment by the owners for 3 storefronts occupied by Soul Good Coffee, Zelda’s Table, and a third TBD. Separately, $25k for the corner unit to be occupied by Soul Good Coffee.
💵Staff recommendation of a resolution designating 4012 – 4024 Main Street appropriate for classification under 7(a) of the Cook County Real Property Assessment Classification Ordinance (conservation, blighted, or renewal area or an area encompassing a rehabilitation or redevelopment plan or project area). This designation will decrease property taxes for 10 years, but staff anticipates net positive tax revenue to the village from sales.

🤝Decreasing the available pawnbroker licenses from 3 to 2. First reading was 5-6-24.
