July 1 Village Board Meeting

More electoral changes coming? Tonight there will be a discussion about whether or not to put Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) on the November ballot as a referendum. RCV is an electoral system where voters rank candidates by preference on their ballots. Instead of selecting a single candidate, voters list their first, second, third choices, and so on. If a candidate receives more than the required percentage of votes, they win the election. If no candidate achieves this percentage, the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated. The votes for the eliminated candidate are then redistributed to the remaining candidates based on the next preference indicated on those ballots. This process continues in rounds until one candidate has the needed percentage of the votes and is declared the winner. The proposed resolution linked below is somewhat involved. We urge all interested parties to attend tonight’s Village Board meeting to have whatever questions or concerns answered.  A second resolution with a proposed referendum would implement a 3-term limit for elected offices of Mayor, Clerk, and Trustee.

Referenda
📊The law firm KTJ was retained to craft Referendum language for inclusion on the November ballot regarding Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). Of note: the referendum states candidates running at-large will be elected with 33% of the vote. Any votes in excess of 33% will be distributed proportionally to the voter’s second choice. You are urged to attend tonight’s meeting and ask whatever questions you may have.
Technically, this is a resolution, and does not need two readings like an ordinance. Theoretically, this resolution can be voted on tonight and passed. This would not mean that Skokie will change to an RCV system, but merely this system will be placed on the November ballot, and voted on by Skokie residents.
Another referendum to limit candidates for Mayor, Clerk, and Trustees, to 3 terms is also being considered tonight.
